I opened a coconut I found outside the other day, I smashed it, so I couldn't drink the water, but I did get to taste a bit and some of the meat. It was awful! I was expecting a fresh, sweet tropical fruit, but instead got a lousy, spoiled milk taste. Blech!! If this is how fresh coconut tastes, then no thank you...

Found outside? I would never eat anything I found outside. Coconuts do go bad but it does take a while. Assuming the coconut is not cracked. Your coconut may have had a small crack in it. If this occurs it does not take long for it to taste bad. Coconut is sweet but not as sweet as some coconut flavored things you may have tasted. The coconut juice is very good not sour. I think you got a bad one thats all. The meat is always a little tough and not as sweet as the milk. Go to your local produce dept. tell the clerk youd like him/her to check out the coconut and make sure there is no crack and free from mold. I hope you get to enjoy one of the greatest fruits available to the general public. Peace out.....................

yes coconut do go bad. if the coconut being there for a long time out of the tree it will go bad, that is why before buying or open the
coconut you should always shake it or check for any crack, you should feel its fullness otherwise it is not good.

Yes, I just opened one. They do not have "dates" on them so it is hard to tell how old it is. I have 2 more I just got from the store and they are fine. The bad one I had for about 2 weeks before opening it. There was no leak but I noticed it seemed a little "slimy" inside and noticed as I got the meat out, there was a moldy type spot in a small area. I cut that out and tried the rest of the coconut. the first bit was bad. I knew something was wrong. I took another piece and cut off the top part of the meat and it was fine. I decided to throw it away though because I did not want to hunt and peck through the whole bag of meat to see what was good and what was bad. Well, now I know not to let them sit too long before opening. They just looks so secure from spoiling with that heavy shell!
