My partner and I have been together for 5 years and I was wondering what ppl think is better...
Getting engaged and having a party then start planning the wedding? Or just start planning the wedding, set the date and bring it on???

I guess it all really depends on you. Are you ready to hustle and get things together for a wedding? Or do you want to savor being engaged? If you take your time planning the wedding, you can have more time for enjoyment in between, and your family and friends will have a better chance of throwing you an engagement party (GIFTS!) and you can really stop and analyze what you want for your day.
I personally, would stop and smell the roses on the way, but that's me.

Getting engaged is fun and meaningful, waiting to get married is hard work (all the planning of everything), and being married is the ultimate.
My now husband asked me to go ring shopping after 1 month of dating. 3 months later he proposed and we've been married 2 years, together for almost 4. Set the date!

It depends, If you like ceremonies, being engaged is a whole romantic phase in your lives. It gives your families a chance to schedule celebratory parties and dinners for you, and gives you a chance to do lots of planning for a formal wedding ceremony, reception and honeymoon.
But if the thought of all of those "mandatory" events and traditions makes you miserable, or if it will bring out the worst in your families, then by all means skip it!

it's definatly better to get engaged and wait a while - although things are great now, getting engaged has a differant effect on everyone and some people can't handle it. make sure you'll be together forever before you get married.
