To use a voodoo doll you are working sympathetic magic. This type of magic uses symbols of the person and the desired effect to bring about the change. Voodoo dolls have nothing to do with Vodou at all. They have a lot to do with Hoodoo though. Hoodoo is African American folk magic. It uses herbs, roots, flowers, stones, and other natural objects to perform magic.

Here is a website that explains how to use poppets or voodoo dolls as they are called. http://groups.msn.com/PaganHearthRecipes/poppetmagick.msnw

As your friend said Vodou is a religion. What is done in the religion does work. We honor the ancestors and we serve the lwa. Which are not gods just elevated spirits. When we ask for something from the lwa we get it. I myself have been healed many times by the lwa when I was still skeptical about the religion. Vodou does work and you do not have to believe in it.

The use of magic and hoodoo is something different than Vodou. You can also learn about Hoodoo on luckymojo.com. Since Hoodoo is magic and not religion then you would have no problem practicing it.

Voodoo works by enlisting spirits to either help or hinder. In Voodoo it is believed that each person has a spirit that is bound to them like a guardian angel, there are other spirits that are either helpful or harmful. The Bible tells of the Powers and Principalities of the air,it is the same.
Those that call on the service of the spirits often become their victims. That is why there are few real Houngan or Manbo.

OK, look at Haiti and Cuba (home of Santeria which is similar to Voodoo). Both are are considered to be the only 3rd World countries in the Western Hemisphere. Both Hatians and Cubans risk their lives to go to the USA. Haiti is the AIDS capital of the world. Does it sound like it works for them???

Robert Tallant exposed the ingridents of Voodoo oils in "The Voodoo In New Orleans". Turns out "Love Oil" is just strawbwerry essential oil. "Flying Devil Oil" is olive oil and red pepper, and "Black Art Oil" was just motor oil. People that bought these itmes were simply being taken.

Could they make it work?

Yeah you could, but since you don't believe in religion not sure why you are playing with religious objects? But from a bible point of view, the bible does warn persons when they want to entertain themselves with such things. What every the reason is, for some set of circumstances, a person eventually will suffer anything from physical, and sometimes psychiatric problems when they get involved with that stuff. To be kind I did not mention Satan or Demons for you. But the results are the same.

Like other forms of magic or religion, it doesn't work. Think about it. If voodoo magic worked, wouldn't people in Haiti use it make their lives better?

The same way any other religious practice works.

We like to call it the placebo-effect.
