The schools today just get on my nerves! My daughter, 8th grade, went to the doctor yesterday. She has an abcess in her big toe. They think she got a splinter at some point and it won't come out with the puss. So they put her on antibiotics for two weeks and said no gym, because it hurts when she walks, let alone running for sports in gym. Well, she forgot her note today, and they are grumping that they need it to give her the day off of gym. They have talked to me and know that the note is real. What would be the big deal to wait untill tomorrow to get it instead of me wasting gas and time to take it there? Am I wrong to get upset, because she did forget, or is the school going just a bit overboard? What do you think?

Have your daughter show the school nurse her toe and get a excused absence from gym class. If they force her to take gym I would do some serious complaining. There shouldn't be any grey area in this case. A serious injury is just that.

Politics! & Lawsuits.. The world has gone crazy blaming everybody and everyone. People are just scared at being sued because ridiculous amounts of money are being paid out when they shouldn't be.
This is having an impact on our society which is terrible. When I was at school in the U.K back in 1984 (12 years of age) The teachers could whack you with a cane on the bottom if they wanted to. We used to write our own letters from our parents to get off Physical Education Lessons!
Perhaps parents should sign disclaimers allowing the teachers to have more control over children and use more common sense.

I think in some ways schools are in a "damned if they do, damned if they don't" situation. Parents are busy and stressed, sure, and don't want their kids to fall through the cracks at school- they want to be informed as issues come up. Schools have an obligation to be consistent- and if that's annoying or seemingly petty, then I think parents just have to suck it up and go with the flow. You're daughter's 12 or 13? How hard was it to put the note in her backpack. And sure, gym class won't get you points on the SAT but hopefully will set some good habits to help get kids healthy, now and for many years to come.

Yes you are wrong...they need the note to go into her file/her school records. They also need the note so that when the state checks attenance recoreds there will be a viable REASON your child did not participate in gym class and YOU won't be called on truancy charges. In short the reason they NEED the note is to cover YOUR BUTT.

Probably a little of both!
Ask someone who knows whether there is a specific law or policy that states that they need to have it in-hand on this day. Sometimes that is the case, and it is just that they are applying the blanket rule.
It is too hard to keep track of each exception to the rule, and then follow-up. Just a thought to take into consideration.
And maybe the person you spoke to is an anal-retentive jerk, and you can kill him/her with kindness when you take the dumb thing to them that they don't really need at this moment.
Can you scan it and e-mail it?

The schools are definitely going overboard. You need to have a signed slip form a parent/guardian just to watch a PG rated film. In this case, it was Rugrats. They made the sixth graders watch Snoopy instead.

There is no reason they should be giving you a hard time its not like gym is a important class, I have never seen Gym on the SATS they can wait until tomorrow, But have a talk with your daughter about remembering important papers.

I feel that there are two issues here. One yes the school should be able to wait. Couldn't she show them her toe? It can't be too pretty.
Secondly, it's not your job to run all over cleaning up her mistakes. She needs to learn to take care of these things her self.
You are right the school should have waited one more day, esp. if they have spoken with you.

I think the school is full of BS. How stupid. You're the parent and you called in for her, that should be good enough for them, I would think. No, you are not wrong. As hectic as life is these days, it's SMALL potatoes.
