yes, i did have to drink the barium concoction.
it wasn't pleasant. it's amazing with all the technologies that they can't make those kinds of drinks at least tolerant.

you just have to suck it up i guess

Look, quite franly, it tastes pretty foul, but then I've tasted a lot worse (my MIL's cooking for example !) It is not a painful procedure as I recall, just a bit uncomfortable and I found that wearing sea sickness bands helped a lot with the initial feelings of nausea. (terrific for morning sickness also ). I was a sceptic about these at first, and it may very well be "mind over matter", but who cares ? It can help. The only, rather gross side effect that I remember, was yellow poo for a couple of days after (sorry about that for the squeamish readers) but the composition of the stuff may be different now. Rather than your doctor, the people at the lab are the best ones to give you this information. For truly medical type potential side effects, ask your docotor.

Hi - Dad of 3 ex-preemiees... Diagnostic tests such as this one not a big concern. Upper GIs are routine and since they are not using sedation even better. I get a little worried with sedation with the young ones. Only real concern I would worry about if it was me was the contrast solution they would make the baby drink... always good to make sure dosage is ok and ask what potential side effects are... then it will pass in the stool. The need for the test to discover, confirm or rule out a diagnosis seems to outweigh concerns for the test. All the best! & Good luck.

My friend is going through that right today. She said the liquid part wasn't that bad. Any time you have to drink something other than what you like it sounds awful. It just makes you go to the bathroom a lot to clean yourself out. They can't see what they need to if there is anything in you. It just cleans you out. The liquid is usually almost clear with a little pleasant flavor to it. You will be just fine. They will see if you do or don't have an ulcer and then they will know how to fix it. Take care and I hope you get through it like a breeze.

I have had to drink it for GI X-Rays and they give you a container a little bigger than a 1 liter bottle and it is sort of chalky, but not much of taste; not pleasant, but not as bad as the X-Prep stuff you have to drink the night before that smells and tasts like death warmed over to make you eliminate your bowels.

Upper GI's are not bad; lower GI's are unpleasant as they go up your rear instead of down your throat. Not scary, but not pleasant either, but usually last less than 20 mins.

The aftermath is that your eliminations will be a white chalky substance for about a day.

I had the banana flavored barium and it wasn't as bad as I was led to believe. It didn't taste nice, but it wasn't horrible. I had no side effects from it and the CT scan didn't hurt at all. The worst part in my opinion is they kept asking me to hold my breath so I was holding perfectly still. After a while that got on my nerves because I had to hold my breath longer than I was comfortable with.

Good luck!

I had to drink Barium for a CAT scan. The stuff they gave me was apple flavored. Something new. You may not be so lucky. Yours may taste awful. But there are no side affects and it is not dangerous just a little unpleasant maybe. Don't worry!!!

I had to drink some when I was in 6th grade many years ago. If I could handle it at that age, I'm sure you can. Yeah, as I recall, it was like drinking an extra thick chalk/plaster shake - pretty nasty, but doable. I don't recall that there are any side effects of significance. Relax, it'll be ok.
