Plasma and LCD technologies are two different ways to produce a high quality picture on your television.
While LCD is sometimes used in different ways, most people when they refer to LCD are talking about the flat panel technology.
LCD and plasma are similar in many ways in their outer appearance. However, they way they produce the picture is completely different. I won't get into the exact way the picture is produced. If you would like to read up on that go to www.howstuffworks.com.
Now there is a lot of controversy over which technology is better. However, many people have mistaken opinions over what makes one better than the other.
LCD's main advantages are:
- Can be found in smaller sizes(<37")
- Can have higher resolution in a smaller size
- Lighter
- Easier to repair if it were to break
Plasma's main advantages are:
- Better colors and contrast
- Larger screen sizes are available and for cheaper than LCD
- Wider viewing angle
- Better response time(very small difference if any however in practical application)
Some issues that are often brought up but are for the most part incorrect:
Plasma does not have major problems with burn in as many people suggest
Plasma does not necessarily use more power(backlight is always on on LCD technology)
LCD Technology does not necessarily last longer(both are often spec'ed around 60,000 hours to half brightness(20 years at 8 hours a day)

it depends really, on what you are going to be using the tv for. by that i mean, are you a gamer? because if you are a gamer, then you should buy an L.C.D. because with a plasma, it can ruin it because it has tubes in the tv and it can only take certain frequencies. plus if you leave your plasma running say, all night long, and you have a dvd in or something to where its at a menu or (a still image) then it can burn that picture into your screen. but the plasma has the best quality, if you are going to get a plasma screen then i highly recomend that you get like a 5 year warranty on it. Thats what we have is a plasma, and we have a warranty on it, because the tubes in it can go out, and the only way that they can usually fix that problem, is to replace the whole tv, because its hard for them to find parts for the inside. LCD's are nice too, but you can see the pixels in them. but they also have a longer life. so now, which sounds better to you? plasma or lcd?

sdiver is exactly right. I have a 50 inch samsung plasma. We researched plasma and lcd and plasma was the best option. the 50 inch was cheaper than the same size lcd. Burn-in is a thing of the past, they DO NOT need to be recharged and they can last 20 years if you don't leave it on 24/7. It is the users decision but my choice is plasma.

If you don't mind getting a rear projection for a big TV (e.g. you're not going to put it on a wall), try getting an LCoS TV. JVC makes some great LCoS TV's. LCoS is essentially LCD technology, without the screen-door effect. Instead of having to buy a new TV when the backlight gives way, you just have to buy a new lightbulb (although expensive, it's cheaper than a whole new TV or plasma recharge).
DLP and plasma aren't the best things for gamers. LCD and LCoS are the only way to go if you don't want an old-fashioned CRT.

Plasma is great but it's still sort of in the experimental early stages so not all the bugs have been worked and the quality level standardized. LCD, of course, is always good.
Really it just depends on your budget. I think LCD would be a good bet since it's cheaper to service if something goes wrong than plasma. I would wait until plasma has been around for awhile and gets better and cheaper.

LCD is your better choice. The only downfall for LCD over Plasma anymore is the viewing angle is better on Plasma TVs. As long as you are not planning on standing in the other room and looking at it from the side you will be fine! You can use your computer with LCD without worry about a burn in. LCD lasts 10 - 12 years. Plasma needs to be recharged in 5-6 years! And as of right now it is not much less than it is for a new one.

LCD computer monitors are very thin flat screen computer monitors and replace an existing computer monitor but are lighter and take up considerably less desk space. They range up to 46-inch in size and come in several sorts. These LCD monitors accept computer input, making them ideal for corporate, government and educational use. Large LCD's are very impressive for exhibition stands and reception areas, especially mounted as video walls. Please see the LCD monitors by size comparison chart above. TV tuners are also available to turn them into televisions in their own right.
Plasma screens and plasma displays use a different technology and currently range from 42 to 84 inches and come in both normal (4:3 ratio) and wide-screen formats (16:9 ratio). They can be used for computer and video input and you can switch between the two for presentations. Plasma info and comparison charts.

LCD, It has a better picture and it lasts much longer. Also, with Plasma you have to inject plasma fluid into the screen every couple of years.

LCD, I've heard about and have seen plasma screen t.v.'s where the little cells go out on the screens and you can't do anything do fix it. So basically you could be staring at a screen that looks like it's got holes in the picture.

LCD is better, but if you do NOT want big screen (over 36 inch), then the BEST picture if you have room is regular old Cathode Ray Tube!! (crt).
Plenty of websites say the same.
Problem is that, until SED tech gets working, those TV's max out at 36 inch.
LCD is also better as it uses the least power.. but is not as bright as CRT and Plasma.
