In China, entering any old room is as simple as walking through the door with the common courtesies you would use in western countries.
However, if you are touring a temple or former home of a wealthy landlord, judge, or other such noble person of the past, you will notice a little ledge that you must step over in the doorway. You should lead off with your right foot, and never step on or stand on the ledge. This to show respect to the owner of the home (or deities in the case of a temple) ,and, they tend to get higher as you move towards the inner courts. It's a way to show respect, and to show that you are lower. You can read more here: http://www.chinahistoryforum.com/index.php?showtopic=11832
