It's obvious a security officer is required to be fairly dumb, and reasonably fat.

The main duties of a security guard are to secure the property of the area they are assigned. Sometimes this is a walking post, other times they may be on patrol in a vehicle.
They are usually responsible for checking the physical security of the building if it is closed, making sure doors are locked, etc.
If the building is occupied, you may be responsible for securing entrance and exit points.
If it is a store, you may be a visible deterrent to shoplifting, or in plain clothes attempting to catch shoplifters.
Just a word to the wise, shoplifters fight and flee with far greater vigor than you would think for such a petty crime.
Before I was on the police department my partner got shot and killed by a shoplifter who stole some rope and a tool. Not worth killing somebody for in my book anyway.

The main duty is to protect people, property, and assets owned / employed by the employer. Your level of training is often dependant on what company hires you to provide these services. You have some good ones and you have many bad. Often times security officers are called customer service agents. They may provide basic road side assistance, vehicle lock outs, and personal escorts to vehicles to ensure someone’s safety at night. It’s often used as a good stepping stone to law enforcement opportunities but don’t let that fool you, wanna be’s who can’t make it on a Police Dept. tend to gravitate to this profession because that’s the best they can do. On the flip side retired police officers also fall back on this profession to gain extra cash. All depends.

When I worked in security, the main tasks I encountered daily were patrolling the property (It was a Ford Plant so it was huge), scanning checkpoints with a laser scanner to prove I had been there, checking incoming and outgoing trucks, controlling the gates and at times the on site traffic, some first aid (I got to perform CPR on a cardiac arrest victim), and public safety (ie. call the real cops). I also did "fire-watch" during welding and construction. All in all a pretty easy job I enjoyed.

Security officers are watchman or simply guards. They patrol, stand post and are the eyes and ears of facilities. They maintain order and respond to any emergencies. they also call the police or fire department when needed.

Well that all depends on the type of security job you get. Most places are very lax and don't have much to do. Other positions have very regimented days and schedules.
