In one word: everything.

Formal-sounding stuff: Obedience, tracking, agility, flyball, rally, search and rescue, "air dog" jumping off docks, flying disk competitions, therapy dog training. What you do will depend on the breed.

Less formal: hide and go seek:) chasing sticks at the beach, shagging balls during batting practice, and all the usual doggy stuff LOL.

I know there are people who believe that some gun dog breeds aren't happy unless they hunt. I think some of it depends on the line and the rest depends on giving the dog ways to use their natural abilities. I would definitely recommend tracking.

My dog comes from a line where his parents (and theirs...) have hunt titles but only some of them actively hunt. They are active in (and have titles in) obedience, tracking, agility, and flyball. Rally will be titled soon and some are certified therapy dogs. (See list below.)

Although I do not intend to hunt with my dog I make sure he has plenty to do to keep his nose/brain/body busy which also means he is happy. We are currently training in obedience and agility and will "show" him (breed conformation) this spring. We'll start obedience trials in the fall and hopefully have our first tracking test.

Hope this helps.

Weimeriners are very athletic dogs so they're able to do just about anything. Try taking up agility which is incredibly fun for both dogs and people (think obstacle course for dogs) or flying disc (frisbee). Other fun sports include tracking, rally and flyball. Also, if you don't hunt but want to use your dog's natural talents, get involved in field trials. You can find out more about all these events at AKC's site here:

Socialize and exercize and make the dog a part of the family.
If you don't have the time or resources to have your pup play with others make sure you do find the time for 15-20 minute walks at least once a day.More often is better. Obedience classes are wonderful for both socializing and basic training. If you do have time, try agility training.

Wow, there are so many things you can do with a gun dog for fun. Even if your dog is not registered you can still get an ILP number from AKC and run your dog in hunt tests, field trials, o/b tests/trials, and on and on.

WHY NOT HUNT???

Instead of wasting thousands of years of SELECTIVE breeding?

Most Sporting dogs...most of ALL the breeds...are couch-spuds,getting FAT & spoiled rotten(when did that stop being a BAD THING,btw?) cuz most people haven't a clue why their breed was developed in the first place.

There are LOTZA events for dogs. Go to the AKC site & RESEARCH! Obedience is the first thing to work on.
Oh...sorry,most folks run screaming from the word *WORK*! What *was* I thinking.

I hunt/work my terriers & we have a BLAST!
