If you are truely Bipolar, you need to be on a mood stabilizer like lithium, Depekote, Tegretol, Lamictal, Topomax, Neurototin, etc.
The most commonly prescibed for Bipolar 1 are Lithium and Depakote. The most commonly prescribed for Bipolar 2 are Lamictal.
In addition to mood stabilizers, most Bipolar patients are on either antipsychotics like Risperdal or Seroquel or anti-depressants.
If you can't focus, talk with your doctor. You probably need a med adjustment.

I have been suffering from post partum depression for the past one year when I gave birth to a baby boy. I couldn't stop thinking about how my husband loves him more than me and how things might be better if he wasn't born at all. Thus, I stayed away from him because I knew that I might do something I will regret for the rest of my life. Almost instantly I went to a therapist and convince them that I need help. Among other things, I've tried herbal supplements and other book to treat depression but nothing works like the Depression Free Method. So now I'm proud to say I'm one of the happiest mother in the world. My husband loves us both very much and I thank the Lord for the blessing he gave us. Depression Free Method?

There are a variety of meds for this disorder. Lithium, Depakote, best bet would be go to a good psychiatrist because I don't think that people who answer these questions are qualified in any way. The only reason I answered with these two names of meds is because I have a lot of family that has mental illness and these are some of the meds I have seen my mom take

Well the truth is there is no best medication....medications work differently on people. It is a trial and error when trying to find the best anti-depressants for someone......thats why you should keep your Dr aware of such side effects that your enduring now.
I have been on Paxil, Depocote, Neuratine, Respital, Cymbalta and now current and successfully on Lexapro and Abilify.....so keep working with your Dr. til you find what works best for you!

Unfortunately my 21 year old Daughter suffers with that and it is not an easy road you must travel. Her Doctor had to adjust and change her medications several times before she got one that worked for her without the side affects. The downside of Bi-Polar seems to be at times Ones mind will tell them they do not need the medication and believe me that is the farthest thing from the truth, you must stay on your medicine!!! See you Doctor, do not hesitate and tell him whats going on, he needs to adjust your medication. My heart goes out to you, but never give up hope..

I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder 6 years ago. they switched my meds several times. I probably tried everything. this past year, I found a new Dr that said i was probably mis diagnosed. he has been treating me for an anxiety disorder instead and within 3 months, we found the proper meds. make sure you get second opinions when it comes to your mental health. the insurance companies have more to do with this "diagnosis" than you may think. good luck to you.

Get back to your doctor and report this. There are many other anti-depressants (SSRI's) that work; you have to find the right one. Wellbutrin, Celexa, etc., etc.,
You are going to get your Lithium checked regularly?

Then you need to tell your doctor.
There are a variety of treatments and it's a very individual thing.
If your doctor is responding the way you think he should, get a new doctor.
