completely false. Can he sue her for slander?

Yes, he could sue her for defamation of character. If he does decide to sue and he should, tell him to ask his attorney to include court costs and attorney's fees in that lawsuit.

You'll need witnesses as to what she is saying, you'll need notarized statements from all of them. Without them it will be hard to prove his case.

In anycase she will have to hire an attorney to defend herself, and that alone won't be cheap, and thus might be the best way to put her in her place and keep her mouth shut in the future.

Go for it.

Well first off, there is no such thing as "can you sue". It is always possible. I think what you really mean is whether your case would have any merit. The answer is no.

First off, you have to prove that there was a financial impact because of the action (lose of job, medical bills related to stress, etc...).

I agree that a family member spreading false allegations is traumatic, but you'll find that you won't find any satisfaction in the court system. We are rapidly, downward spiraling society in which we are spending millions to settle name calling.

If there is truly an outrage here is that my tax dollars would be used to fund such non-sense.

I would say yes. BUT do you really want to go there. I mean your own family member. I would think you could handle this better by just showing the rest of your family how much of a liar this family member is. They will most likely NEVER believe anything this member says ever again. I would think this is far better.

Have fun with this. Next time you see that family member, eye them suspiciously and ask them what's wrong with their eyes? Tell them their pupils sure look funny....as if they was on dru....then stop in mid sentence and just stare at them. Look at their arms and ask what's that hole on their arm? The only people you know that have holes like at are the ones who like needles a little too much. Then wink and tell them oh never mind, it must be a mole or insect bite huh? If they sniffle, tell them you heard people that snort cocaine sniffle alot.

If this is damaging his reputation then yes...but it's most likely not that big of a deal. Lawsuits cost a hell of a lot of money, it's probably not worth going to court.

Not really. The judge will laugh you out of the court. You know it's not true and if the people who they tell know you and don't believe it, the the one telling looks bad...not your son.
