There are several museums to see - like any major city.
Just pick up a few leaflets from your hotel of hostel, ask directions to Abraxas. get some laughing Buddha and see where your mood takes you.
The Heineken museum is good, plenty of art; Rembrandt, Van Goth etc etc
Get a cannel boat, their good fun

The MAIN atraction of amsterdam is amsterdam itself :D
further there are many musea like van gogh ,rijksmuseum(rembrand collection) ,stedelijk museum contamperaie art), rembrand huiis, heinken experience, madam tusaud (wax statues) and new metropolis science for kids)(nemo) tropen museum (tropical museum)
What also a great thing to do is specialy when it rains (and it will) go take a boat trip on the endles canals and u will see Amsterdam from another point of view :D

The Van Gogh museum, Rijksmuseum and if you're with kids or like Braniacs, the Nemo museum.
Other sights that are nice to visit are Leidseplein (if you like going out, try Paradiso or Melkweg, both are in that area) and the Zeedijk (which is an Asian themed street and right next to the Red Light District, if you're interested). If you want something easy and cheap, take a canal tour on one of the many touring boats.

Yes, go to all the museums mentioned by Duvel and Floris v but also don´t forget to go to the Anne Frank Huis and Museum.
Enjoy yourself. There are lots of places to see and don´t pay attention to the first two guys.

The historical ship museum is closed (under construction).
Take the train to Leiden if you want to see more museums.

Rijksmuseum you have to see even though part of it is under construction. Stedelijkmuseum for modern art. Allard Pierson museum for ancient Egypt is very nice too. Also "het Begijnhof" is really nice. Go to the VVV for tourist information and you'll find even a lot more.
