I have been looking at the guinea pig. I hear those are very socialble pet. I want something that is nice and I can hold. What size of cage should I get?

Or, do you have any suggestions for another furry rat animal. (No dog or cats or ferret, or bunny).

i have both a rat and a guinea pig. guineas are not social animals. they can be held in small intervals, but get scared very easily and make alot of noise. i have a sheltie breed of guinea. she has long hair which needs to be groomed. they need ALOT of attention to be calm around people. you should get one as a baby. if you go away for a week or 2 and leave it with someone who doesnt hold it, it will go back to being scared.

my rat is nice. she is a female fancy rat. she doesnt smell and keeps her cage cleaner than the guinea. (believe it or not!! haha) she is more social and likes to play games. rats are very very intelligent!!

if u decide on getting a guinea i would research the right breed for u. google "cavy breeds" or "cavy breed profiles". this should give u plenty of info. about a good cage. look at www.cavycages.com
its a fantastic site which shows you how to make a cage for ur cavy (guinea pig) that is bigger and cheaper than store bought ones. it also has a size guide showing u how much space u need for how many guinea pigs u decide to have.

also, if u do get a guinea, i would reccomend getting 2. they get bored very easily and are very sociable with eachother as they r pack animals in the wild. get both at the same time at the same age, as if u introduce a new pig too late, they may fight. make sure u dont get a male & female though because they can breed every 48 hrs!! even inter sibling breeding, because they dont know!

I truly hope i was able to help out. good luck with ur new pet of choice!! =)

A guinea pig will be the best bet. They are pretty calm, nice little animals that are big enough to 'hold' like a tiny tiny dog or something. We also had a rat that just SUCKED. I have heard they are nice, but the one we had was mean and tempermental. Not to mention if it gets out it is GONE more than likely. If you don't have another pet (like a dog or cat) that would attack the 'pig, you can let it down on the floor and he's big enough to keep an eye on. Plus they are nicer to loook at. I really liked ouur 'pig I wish I still had him (he died after YEARS.)

Guinea pigs are cute and fairly active but get heavy holding on to them and they can't sit on your shoulder or anything. my experience is that hamsters start to sleep all day after the first few weeks. Gerbils are fun pets! But the best are really rats themselves. They're very intelligent and can be trained to do tricks. I would get as big a cage as possible to fit your house and provide lots of toys the animal can interact with to make sure he has something to do while you're not home.

get a rat.best pet you can get besides a dog and vary solcil love to be with u,also they keep cage cleaner than a guinea pig and almost never bite and they like to play games, but make sure you get one at store that ether holds them a lot or get one from some one who is getting rid of one.make sure it dosn't bite or take it's food aggressivly and isn't to skittish.for the cage a big bird cage with levels u add works fine a farret cage rat cages or 30 gollon tank will work but make sure u have a top(they can jump really high and are as smart as a dog).right now i my self have two and i'm really happy with them and i think money wise bird cage is the way to go it works like a reggular rat cage.i give the rats two thumbs up

I love rats. First of all you should know that rats really do better in same gender pairs since the are very social they tent to get lonely by themselves. It will take it a while to get used to its environment, even up to a month because it is probably really scared right now. I usually wait until my rats are a month or to old before I let them run around on their own because just like human babies, rat babies can get into a lot of trouble on their own. If it is a boy, you will know, trust me. As far as toys go, they like to chew so I give them old tshirts and stuff. They also like toilet paper roll but will lose interest when they grow to big to fit inside (although it is very cute when they try and get a bit stuck). Good luck with your baby!

I have a guinea pig named Elvis. He is a long haired rosset and he is the sweetest thing. They are easy to take care of and are just as happy in your arms as in their cages. They do eat a lot so take this into consideration. But you would be happy with them. Hamsters and rats are nocturnal so they sleep ALOT but guinea pigs require only about 4 hours of sleep at night or throughout the day.

Gerbils are better than hamster because they are less pron to bite. I have had gerbils since a kid and if you handle them alot as babies they are very friendly won't run and hide every time you enter the room. Also a 10 gallon aquarium works well for them.

I'd get a couple of hampters...the small ones r really cute. But as advice on what u get i would read the lable on the tank so u don't get different sexs' unless u want baby rats.
