Lew's estimate is funny.
There are nearly 12,000 lakes in Minnesota alone ( at least 10 acres in surface area, but of course that's not very big). And even though Minnesota has a lot more than, say, Arizona, there are dozens of thousands of lakes, perhaps a hundred thousand or more.

I'm sure a more focused question (lakes over 1000 acres, man made lakes, etc) would be easier to answer.

Pictures of the United States include all the Great Lakes. Is there an echo in here or is it just me??

Oklahoma lists about 100 lakes, Tennessee list 6 major lakes, so based on a lot of guessing, I would guess around 4000. Your question leaves a lot of leeway for definition, but with some research state to state you could get a pretty good estimate.

You would be better served to ask how many lakes there are above a certain size, whether natural or man-made, etc.

Just asking how many lakes there are in the US is an unreasonable question which would result in any number of answers without providing any kind of knowledge at all.
