login in your wireless router, most of the cases you just write 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.0.1 in internet explorer and a window pops up askin for a username and password,
if you never changed them check the manual but most of the cases
username : admin
password : 1234
while you are there search for wireless or wifi settings
now there are a couple of things you can do to protect wifi
there is a setting called WEP where you can enter a password and this encripts ur connection and only ppl who know the particular password can use the internet and network.
thats the first stage, unfortunatly today cracking the WEP has become "easy-ish" for a trained programmer, there are even books CRACKING WIFI FOR DUMMIES.
anyway to solve this in your router settings next to the WEP there is another setting called MAC address. here you can choose whoever can login to the network. every computer/pda/mobile that can access the network has a unique MAC address(serial number sort of).
currently that is the most secure encription available, you can also add a firewall to increase your network's security
also you said that they are slowing your wife's pc. that might mean that somebody is stealing your private data or use the pc for malicious purposes you cant even imagine(even bank frauds)
hope this was of help, if you need to ask somethin just drop an email :D

Connect to yr router via ethernet cable and open yr settings. You can either use the shortcut which was installed if yr ISP supplied you with a disk or you can check the IP address of yr router by clicking on Start/Run and typing cmd into the dialogue box. A window will open whereupon you should type ipconfig /all
Look to where the 'default gateway' is and make a note of the address; it's usually 192.168.1.0 or somesuch. Now go to yr browser of choice and type in this address into yr browser address bar and you will connect into yr router settings.
Go the 'advanced' page with user = admin and password = admin.
Now select yr wireless page and change yr encryption to WEP or, better still, WPA/PSK (WPA2 will probably not work with yr wireless receiver) and choose a password (or go to https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm to get one) and enter it in to the appropriate field. Save the changes. Change yr advanced user name and password too. Repeat for any option to 'Hide SSID broadcast' and also MAC filtering. Make sure you are saving the changes. The last option will allow only yr computer to connect to the network even if the wireless encryption is broken. You need to know the MAC address of yr wireless receiver and it will be the 'physical address' in the ipconfig /all listing under wireless connection.

Hey Dudette,
If you believe you have been hacked, you need to harden your system.
1. CHANGE the default password. "password" or blank are standard. They are what EVERYONE uses.
2. Rename the SSID to something unique. Do not keep the standard "linksys-model". This is an invitation for a hacker.
3. Turn off SSID broadcasting. If you have this on, it is like the retard that goes around to EVERYONE he sees saying "HI! I'm Johnny." There is no need for anyone to know you have wireless except you! This means you have to hard code the SSID into your computer instead of "Browsing" to it.
4. Turn on WPA or WPA2. You will need to enter a "Passphrase" REMEMBER IT!. you will need to enter it into your computer to connect to your network.
5. Turn off remote configuration. This is used for people on the outside world to manage the firewall. You do not need this.
Good luck.
Tom

Activate the WEP , WPA or other code protection... this is all in the software on the router usually, or on the Wireless point, and use 128 bit encryption or above.
Linksys has the best and easiest encryption available

No. People put encryption on their wireless to stop people like you stealing their bandwidth. to use someone else's wireless without their express consent is considered theft of service and carries up to 5 years in prison. Using protected wireless requires cracking encryption, which is almost internationally handed now under the same laws as terrorism. This carries up to 30 years. Very clever of you to publicly declare your illegal intent on a site monitored by every police and government agency and which stores all your details for years.
