Use Q-Tips. The key is to not push the q-tip too far into the ear because, as you've learned, it will make the wax go in deeper. There's also a chance you could damage your eardrum. Since the wax is now deep in your ear, put a small amount of mineral oil or baby oil on cotton balls and put them in your ears when you sleep. It will help draw the wax out so at least you won't be uncomfortable.

Dead serious on this one- I spent literally about 2,000 on ear problems this year, and found plain old household things literally cured it. This was on one of the papers my docctors gave me:
Put mineral oil (like baby oil, but with no scent) in ear overnight with cotton ball. The next morning, make a mix of
1/3 cup white vinegar,
1/3 cup white rubbing (isopropyl) alcohol
1/3 cup warm water
gently squirt tis mix into your ears(with one of those blue teardrop baby nose sucker things..lol) to rinse away the (hopefully) softened earwax. Dry ears with a blowdryer. If it doesn't work the first time try again.
this is IF YOU >>DO NOT<< have any perferations in your eardrum!!
This worked for me, and to keep the wax from getting crazy, pour a little rubbing alcohol in there once a month when they are clean. This will save you tons of money. LOL! Let me know if it helps.
