Steps:
1.Clean the painted surface w/ tack cloth, remove all wax,dirt.
2.Tape off the area tobe gold leafed.
3.Apply size-clear to painted surface, let it dry, until tacky to the touch, use the knuckle on your index finger to test how tacky it is.
4.Apply the gold leaf, in a shop where their is no wind or moisture.
5.Let dry four hours.
6.you can use a slow speed drill w/ large rubber pad on it, if you want the round swirle look.
7.Clear coat or leave it w/out.

You could have it plated, which would be very expensive. Or you could cover it in gold leaf (expensive but not so expensive) or you could cover it in something called 'dutch metal' which looks like gold leaf but is cheaper. Basically you (may have to key it with emery paper first) then apply gold size, then the leaf and then protect it with varnish

The cheapest way is to make the gold leaf yourself. First, get some gold seeds. Plant them where they will be in full sun and water lightly. When leaves first appear, cut them back for the first week or so. This will make the leaves bigger and more vibrant. When they are as big as the palm of your hand it is time to harvest them. Dry them hanging upside down in a shady place. When the edges turn up it they are ready to apply. Just moisten the surface and rub them on. Good luck!

purchase your gold leaf you must then make sure the area is clean, heat it on/ iron with a protective shield/brown. paper or a derivative .Failing that ask a specialist. good luck.

How's this for a suggestion?
Get some high temp. gold spray paint.
Spray it onto a small paint brush.
Then paint the edges of your engine's cylinder fins.
