Bittorent is s a peer 2 peer aplication. It is one of the most popular ones and is used for legal downloads as well as the less than legal ones. Supposedly most internet traffic these days is bittorrent traffic.

It is basically as safe as any other method of downloading, you could just as easily get a virus by downloading something from a website.

With bittorrent you upload to others as you download from them, speeds depend on how fast you upload and how many people are uploading completed downloads.

Bittorrent is gradualy being used by companies to offer larger downloads as it is cheaper

I use Torrent sites all the time. I don't use bit torrent though, I use Azureus along with www.torrentspy.com. Just be careful about what you download, always read the other downloaders comments about the file, and you'll be safe.

i have used it in the past. it is sometimes very frustrating though. there have to be so many seeds available so you can download. it can also takes ages. there's nothing more annoying than having your download at 99% only to have all the seeds drop out leaving you with nothing. if you have access to the newsgroups they are much better & safer.
