I am the same way, not a jerk, but I grew up very shy and when I first got on-line I could be anyway I wanted and no one knew. Its like I could try out being someone else and determine what people like and don't like so I could mold myself into something I saw as better then what I was.

A man once said to me "I can be anybody I want to on the internet...in real life I have to be me".
It's a fantasy world, and yes, we can do things like being a jerk...does it really make you feel better? I wouldn't think so.
Just do things that make you feel good, I hear guilt in this question. You can stop it.

You negative feeling are ignored in real life, but when given the oppertunity it's very hard to resist letting them out. Thugs WOULD beat you up in real life if you insulted them, where else than on the internet can you give them a piece of your mind without them being nothing of a threat to you. Really what sort of a thug when there angers gone would take the enormous effort to attempt to find out who you are.

when you think of the perfect come back line but the person has already walked away, it sucks. online - the other person never walks away and you have time to respond with the wit and cutting sarcasm that you feel they deserve. I become a bit of a jerk online, but I also single out people who truly ask stupid questions. "I am 28 and I am afraid to drive a car, what should I do?" was one of my favorites.

Here, you have no fears. You can say anything and read anything with the knowledge that you are anonymous reading messages from an anonymous person. One can do almost anything with an all pervasive mask on.

Because you are a coward. It's the same as yelling abuse from the safety of a moving car.
