Just stick a mouse trap just inside the scuttle hole with some peanut butter on it and wait a little bit, they'll come to it. Dump the dead one off and put it back til you have all of them.
I got mice once and caught about ten in a hour, my cat loved them.

My brother in law owns a farm so they get mice quite often, they sell traps that are animal friendly. My sister gets them at Walmart. They are a plastic box that you put a treat inside the door only opens one way, once they are in there they can not get out. Which allows you to set them free in a better area away from your home.

Use traps death is mostly instant and if you catch them in a bucket they may have the chance to bite you before you get them outside to let them go. Poising and sticky paper are smelly options. Remember they will eat through just about anything including your wires, furniture, clothes and etc.
On the other hand if you can hear them and there is insulation on the attic floor what you may have a squirrel running around on your roof.

Go with the bucket idea, it's humane and make sure you take the mice a fair distance away from your house so they don't return.
Whatever you decide, don't use poison, the mice will eat the poison and die somewhere else in the house.
They'll decompose, smell and then you have to start ripping walls out to find the rotting corpses.

I've had great success with this trap in my house:
http://veganstore.com/index.html?stocknumber=266
It’s also available for $2 cheaper here (although I prefer to buy it from the other place since I’m not a big fan of PETA):

I've caught over ten mice with it so far and it can be used over and over indefinitely. Or, you can try making the free homemade humane trap described here:
http://www.helpinganimals.com/wildlife_livingWithMice.asp
If you do live trap mice, you MUST be willing to check the traps at least twice a day and release the mice promptly, approximately a mile away from your home, in an area with some sheltering bushes or plants. It is much more cruel to allow a mouse in a live trap to slowly starve to death than to kill it quickly with a snap trap. If you are not willing to check the traps often, use snap traps instead. If you use snap traps, it's a good idea to orient the mice so they go into the traps straight. This will help ensure that they are killed rather than just maimed. Put the trap, business side facing out, into a plastic flower pot with one side cut off so the pot sits flat on its side, like a cave. Make sure the trap has enough room to snap freely. Of course, you still run the risk of having a mouse painfully caught by his leg, which he may try to gnaw off, or severely injured but not killed. I wouldn't use snap traps myself.
The absolute cruelest traps are glue traps. Mice have been known to gnaw off their own limbs and tear off their skin in an effort to escape, as they starve or dehydrate to death or suffocate in the glue. It can take three to five days for them to die. Poison isn't any better, as the mice die slowly and painfully from internal bleeding. It can take up to a week for them to die, and then they smell as they rot behind your walls.
It doesn't take much extra effort to be kind. You will feel better and so will the mice! Good luck!

In the attic, use a bucket 18'' deep or so, inside was food for the mice.....on the outside of the bucket was a ramp.....the mice use ramp to get into bucket, but they can't get out.....you need to be vigilant about checking.....but it is a humane way to trap the mice
**remember it has to be deep enough for the mice to not be able to climb out, yet wide enough for the smells of the food to entice them.
