No it is not illegal as long as you purchased the DVD legally. You will need software to get that done however that can convert dvd to ipod video well there are sites on the net you can use to get legal downloads and software to convert them onto your ipod you can go to http://www.ipod-vibez.com for a full list of download sites you can use.
