Yes, it does, Java is machine independent, you will just need the required libraries to be able to run java applications.
If you mange to develop java programs then you may like to install the full JDK(Java Development Kit) it comes with more libraries, utilities, compilers...etc than the standard runtime edition.
If you just wanna view web pages contain java-applets or applications, then download the JRE(Java Runtime Environment) which includes the JVM(Java Virtual Machine) within it.
Download the JRE from here : http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp
For the latest version(JRE 6), download from here:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
Or if you would like to take a look at the available JDKs, or java technologies, then land here: http://developers.sun.com/resources/downloads.html
Thanks.

Yes Java works on windows XP.
To run Java applications or applets you need to have the Java Runtime Environment installed on your PC.
If you are a Java programmer you will need the Java Development Kit to develop java programs.

Yes, of course. But there are some versions don't provide the Java Virtual Machine. You need to install it separately.

Yes, but only as much as Java ever "works" - it isn't efficient, fast, or user-friendly - but Java never is!
