They tend to do both as it is convenient for them.

In the US, the media is controlled by Wall Street. The bottom line affects almost everything they do. That is why real news is so limited on the nightly news programs, and why programs like the Today Show are so dumbed down that they aren't really news. They are more "info-tainment" there to serve a less sophisticated public.

One thing you can't ignore, is the cozy nature between the two (media and politics), and the fact that the media likes to build up politicians and then tear them down. Senator Obama is likely to be the next victim of this media tradition. They do this because it sells papers and is good for ratings.

The Media in America reflects their own personal agenda. Objective reporting is a thing long past.
