the gold rush was huge during this time... and not just in Australia either it gathered momentum all over the word. People were digging in the dirt everywhere hoping to find yellow rock that would give them a stepping stone to riches, unfortunately the Great Depression took everything shortly after but they felt like they had made it for a little while...

In Europe it was the industrial revolution. every country after UK made a lot of progress in industry with the new machines and so one. It's also the time of progress in transports (trains, boats, ...)
But that incredible fact made victims: the workers who were working in terrible conditions (too many hours, women and children obliged to work to have money to live) and for a misereable wage.
Besides that the capitalists made a lot of money and the liberal courant was developping.
It's also the time of german unificiation: first an economic one (Zollverein begins in 1834) and after the commune of Paris which opposed germans and French, Germany was politicallly unified and proclaimed at Versailles on the first january 1871 and they took Alsace and Lorraine in their country.
Italy was also in a process of unification.
It's also the colonisation of Africa and Asia by the europeans at that time (Algeria by France, Egypt, and so on)
Russia was also colonisating (Siberia and tried to have Mongolia and Mandchourie).
ANd my little country (Belgium) after his birth in 1830 was developping extremely fast and good (our king Leopold the second took possession of Congo in 1889)
