I have heard of "New Math" (I think it was a Mathematics Initiative put forth by the US Department of Education in the 1960's), but I dont know much more then that. I was hoping to hear from maybe some people who lived through it, what was it like (or if you just know). Thanks!

New math is Binary math where with a combination of zeros and ones you can cover the scope of all possible math outcomes of (adding, subtraction, multiplication and division) With just 2, or binary, choices of zero or one, it is possible to program computers.
zero= 0= no=off
One=?(one could equal various numbers depending on the position, i will explain below) = yes=on

I am sure you have heard what a Byte is in computer jargon.
example below
00101101

Any one of these zeros make up a bit.
8 bits = a byte
in the column on the right there is a 1.
this means that this is on and the value is 1, if it were off it would be 0
the next column there is a 0.
this means that it is off and the value is 0, if it were on with a 1 the value would be 2.
The third column there is a 1.
this means that it is on and a value of 4, if it were off it would have a value of 0.
Get the jist. starting at the far right the value is either
1 or 0
next 2 or 0
next 4 or 0
next 8 or 0
next 16 or 0
next 32 or 0
next 64 or 0
next 128 or 0

notice that each coluns , yes, or on or 1 doubles in value.
therefore the example I gave you has a numeric value

00101101
it is on for values of 1, 4, 8, and 32
it is off for all other values.
therefore you just add all these numbers up to get the value of this Byte. which equals 45.
Note that every keystroke on your computer is represented by a byte or numerical value. A capital B has a different byte than a small b.
This simplified the process of computing as at each circuit within the electronics of a computer had just 2 choices. Machine intelligence is is based on millions/billions of these yes no, on off choices.
hope this helps. gl

Old Math consisted of Arithmetic, Algebra and Geometry based on Euclid's Elements. New Math introduced a lot of things such as number bases, topology, inequalities, sets and matrices.

New Math is what you learned at school.
Old Math is the same thing only you didn't have to show all the little steps on how you achieved the answer. It was very confusing and frustrating to those who had to live it.
