Until the year 2000, there were four recognized oceans: the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Arctic. In the Spring of 2000, the International Hydrographic Organization delimited a new ocean, the Southern Ocean (it surrounds Antarctica and extends to 60 degrees latitude).

There are also many seas (smaller branches of an ocean); seas are often partly enclosed by land. The largest seas are the South China Sea, the Caribbean Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea.

There are 104 seas at present declared by International Hydrographic Organization.

Hi Richard,
Well I see that some still adhere to the old notion of the seven seas. But I just totted up 16 that I have either visited, or heard of.
Perhaps the producers should re-name the sea-salt product to
"Er, Maybe Umpteen Sea Salt"
My favourites for fun are the Caspian, the Red, the Dead, and the Med. Oh and the Black one out of Varna, Bulgaria.
I shall attempt to find out how many bodies of water there are on the planet called seas, out of curiosity raised by your fine question.
I shall not include the sea of tranquilty, or the sea of storms.
Get back to you on that one !
Bob.
I have half a mind to ignore

The earth has 7 oceans and many, many seas. The 7 oceans are Arctic, North Atlantic, South Atlantic, North Pacific, South Pacific, Indian and Southern.

Seas include the Barents, Okhotsk, Mediterranean, Caribbean, South China, Japan, White, Black, Red, Yellow, Ionian, Libyan, Aegean, Baltic etc.

Though the four oceans of the world (Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Arctic) are actually pieces of one great world ocean that covers about seventy percent of the planet, sailors often refer to the "seven seas." So, here's the list:

North Atlantic Ocean
South Atlantic Ocean
North Pacific Ocean
South Pacific Ocean
Arctic Ocean
Antarctic (Southern) Ocean
Indian Ocean
