There are many factors due to Singapore high standard of living. One of the obvious factor is the Government revenue. Example, the Singapore Government imposed high Duty of Petrolum, as Petrolum is a critical product in many industries, the resulting higher cost, thus consumers have to pay a higher price. But generally foods in Singapore is not considered expensive. Of course if you are talking about motor vehicle or Tobacco, then it's probably the most expensive in the whole world. As the price of 1 packet of tobacco of about $11, out of that about $8 go to Government revenue. Same as motor car, almost 200% of the car cost go to Government revenue.
Don't forgot we need to pay the "world Higher pay Ministers" salaries.

What? Since when was everything expensive in Singapore?! Are you going to really expensive places? Of course, there it's expensive. Everywhere I've been, and I lived there, was pretty cheap. If you go to restaurants, then yes, it's bound to be quite expensive.

When you say that Singapore's expensive, you must be comparing to another country or maybe where you come from. Let's not forget that a real 40 carat diamond ring will be expensive in whichever major city you are in.
Or is it expensive because you are a tourist and you don't know where or how to get the most for your money?

What things in Singapore are expensive?
Food is cheap here unless you only eat in restaurants.
Even branded goods are still cheaper in Singapore than in other countries.
Transportation is also cheap, especially taking a cab, in comparison to countries like Korea, Japan and London.
And we also have Daiso, the $2 shop, and other budget stores, so i can't really think of things that are really so expensive.

Thats is your impression:
for person earning 100 USD a month Singapore is very very expensive, impossible to life.
for person earning 100.000 USB a month Singapore is very cheap and very very easy to life.
Depends on your "view/window frame" what are you used/compare to and not what other persons think SIngapore is cheap or expensive.
Westerns will find Singapore cheap as locals (indonesia/Malay) will find Singapore expensive
