I have a 1gb memory and have just bought another 1gb. I checked the available ram and it looks like my computer is just using 56% of it at a time. So did I waste money on a 1gb memory because my computer wont be using it anyways? or will there be any increase in performance?

Ani is right. You only need 2GB of RAM if you will be gaming, or using Adobe Photoshop, or video editing apps. Any other software, and 2GB is a waste.

It's good to have excess memory, because when your computer runs out of memory, it switches to what's called the "page file" , it's basically a chunk of memory on the hard drive and that will slow you down tremendously if that happens.

If you are planning on installing Windows Vista it is recommended to have 2gig of memory. Otherwise, only upgrade if your computer is extremely slow.
