John Heywood's Proverbes (1546):
However it probably dates to much earlier and it was always a joke to fool young children. nobody took it seriously.

I think it is an old nursey rythme, about a man who lives on the moon, and somewhere along he mentions it is made off cheese!

That is I think the first mention off the cheese but then many childrens books and tv programmes have gone onto the cheese made of moon aswell, including button moon, wallace and gromit etc.

maybe there are to many craters on the moon..... when people looked into the moon when its close enough to be seen through naked eyes, they might have thought that its merely a cheesecake.

it could also been by those people who celebrate mooncake festival..... they might wanted to eat the moon (too excited and fascinated by some myths) but because it seem to be too far away and rather impossible... so they just made a cheesecake, and said that they ate the moon...

when you say something today to a friend, by the end of the week, you'll find out that, it's not what you orignally said, when somebody else ask's you about it.... the main words might be there, but, unfortunately, the structure of the sentence would not be the same...and as time goes by, more words will be added and finally , what you said is not what you said any more.....

so simple... i think that is what might have happened.... somebody might have said something else... eventually it turn out to be moon was made of cheesecake

This probably dates from the 16th century. John Heywood's Proverbs (1564), says 'the moon is made of greene chees'. It is thought that in this context the word 'greene' means 'new', rather than having a green colour, as young cheeses would often have a more mottled appearance, much like the cratered moon.

Wallace?

I don't think anyone has ever taken it literally.

These days we usually only see cheese in prewrapped lumps in the supermarket. A whole cheshire cheese is round, pale yellow and has dents in the top. The full moon looks remarkably like a ripe cheshire cheese.
