I will be moving in with someone soon that smokes indoors like a chimney (and no, she is not going to quit, not now, not ever, and I don’t have any choice in the decision, I need the cheap rent) we will be moving into a fresh, brand new apartment. I want to get one that is the best at removing as much of the smoke odor as possible. Also, what would you recommend to get some out of the odor out of her car, in case I need to borrow it. It smells like a bar in there, only a little worse.

Air purifiers are not really designed to remove smoke and smoke odors as they describe. They will work but you will be require to do weekly to biweekly maintenance. The "filter free" units have to be cleaned and then you can not put the elements back in for up to twenty four hours. Filter is the way to go but check the price on replacement filters and how long they will last under heavy use. as far as the smell your unit will need to be equipped with a charcoal filter again check the price of the filters. All filters come with a rating for square footage.

The easiest way would be to have your roommate smoke in one area, staying away from carpet and furniture. Or ask if she would go outside to smoke.

Not to be mean as I am a smoker, I smoke outside 90% of the time, would be to find something she can not stand the smell of and use it to make your point. Like boiled cabbage or sauerkraut or fish or strong candles, and again don't do it to be mean just to make sure she understands your point. And if she is unwilling to live with some of things that you require maybe there is another roommate that you can find???

Is the cheap rent worth it? If it is, a great air purifier called the Venta Air Washer, about $300.00, made in Germany. Check out their website. AS for the car, a thorough shampooing and a sprinkling of baking soda to absorb odors, and remove the ashtray.

I recommend the Sharper Image Ionic Breeze (it usually comes with a mini model that plugs into the car too). They can be a it procey, but if you want to save money, don't get their most current model directly from Sharper Image (the Quadra). Go to an electronics store and get an older model for less money.

One down side is that they do not clean a large space. Depending on the square footage of the apartment, you might have to get more than one.

Get an Oreck. They make a great air purifier and if it doesn't work they'll take it back and refund your money. Usually for free, they throw in a bathroom freshener that is battery powered and can go in the car. Use these and Fabreeze air freshener and the fabric spray. You should be smoke free.
