I think you should give a bit more info but...

Its hard I know, sometimes you just got to ignore but if you're anything like me, you wont ignore it! Tell someone you trust about what is going on - preferably higher up if possible. Because you have to work 5 out of 7 days a week, you should be made to feel comfortable and not have to suffer abuse or any type of racial discrimination.

Since you said INSTITUTIONAL racism, you're talking about the processes that work against people of a particular race regardless of whether anyone has prejudiced intentions, right? I know what it's like. Whether people are giving you prejudiced attitudes or not, you can still feel the effects of racist ways of doing things. The people there may not be seeking to set back "your people" or whatever, but it just happens because of the way things are organized.

For example, a workplace's dresscode rules against dredlocks or cornrows for male workers. Chances are that the people who wear those will be ONLY black or hispanic, and almost never white. Without being prejudiced, the institution still discriminates because it's practices are organized around the norms of the white community.

I wouldn't say you should go nuts over it and try to take something like that to the highest ranking people within your company, but I would make some people aware of the situation. If it's blatant bigotry you are speaking of, then yes, make an issue of it. If your boss secretly notifies all your co-workers about a job opening with better pay so that no one of your race can have it, that is bigotry, not institutionalized racism.

I don't know if you can relate to this, but I have constantly encountered institutionalized racism in the way of nepotism. I live in a small town and people tend to only hire friends and family. If you're black, you're most likely neither their friend or family, and you get stuck working all of the crappy jobs. All I have been able to do is bust my @ss to outdo the competition, network with people who aren't of my race, and aggressively seek opportunities for career advancement.

If you're out there working hard to make it up the career ladder, you will be able to gain an advantage on those people who are privileged but too lazy to do the work. Work hard no matter how hopeless it seems and FORCE people to recognize your abilities. Become an overachiever. It's not fair, but that's what happens when a whole color of people are told to start the race 10 miles behind the starting line. If you can't handle the stress, get into a job with people you feel more comfortable with.

Even the most complex of investigatory techniques are inadequate to flesh it out, let alone substantiate its existence in such a form palatable to the larger community.
