If my local is anything to go on then the ban has not affected business and punters still drink there. The pub therefore has become a better environment for all customers and no one appears to be put out by it. So many you can please all of the people some of the time.

i thought they would be ruined... but they outlawed smoking in all clubs/pubs/venues in brisbane last year.. and everyone still goes out.. they just all congregate on the sidewalk and smoke. lol. (unless the club has a smoking 'pen')
So i guess the bars must be losing money, because people are outside smoking, and probably not drinking as much.
I thought it was going to be really crap, but as a smoker it doesn't bother me that much. you don't get ashed on by people at the bar, strangers don't try and bum off you as much, and there aren't any drunk idiots burning everyone on the dancefloor.
Plus you hair doesn't smell as bad the next morning!
I'd say the only really bad thing is that it seems to lead to more fights... Like if all the emos/goths etc are out the front of their indie club smoking, and across the road there're all the guys from a 'normal' pub or club smoking.... :S bad mix! worse than the taxi rank!

Apparently in Eire trade slumped 7%.this will cause some landlords to go under. Many people will just drink at home.
I don't smoke so welcome the ban,but for others it will totally spoil their enjoyment.A lot of older town houses and clubs do not have the land to provide covered veranda type structures so smoking will be on the pavement outside. They won't need as many cleaners.I ran pubs for years and appart from the compulsive beer mat tearing fraternity smokers were responsible for the most mess.No more blocked urinals------a landladys idea of heaven!

In reality trade will drop off a bit for a few weeks as the smokers stop going in protest. However after a sort while they will start coming back.
My sister owns a pub in Scotland and felt the force of the ban for about 2 or 3 weeks.
More of a threat to your local is the dodgy ecomomy, as people are putting more money out on mortgages / rent and utilities and leisure activities are getting missed out because they can't afford it.
Pubs in England will survive te ban, but they may not survive the lack of spending

They will become nicer places to visit or if they serve food things will taste better too.
I live in the republic of Ireland where it has been banned for a couple of years , we recently had a family re-union, family from northern ireland and england were amazed at how fresh it was in the pubs here and most of them are smokers they all think its great. Also my father in law 75 years old has never smoked but owns a bar for the last 15 years he had surgery lately and the docs told him to stop smoking as his lungs were f++++d with smoke.

In Australia we already have no smoking bans in clubs, pubs, playgrounds, all outdoor social functions and I think it's 100 metres from shop entries.
The fines are steep.
In all clubs and pubs in QLD there are covered outdoor smoking areas such as patios, verandas and the like for smokers to light up and also to socialise.
I heard they may be bringing in another law saying NO SMOKING in cars with children.

Well the smoking ban is already in scotland and to be honest i don`t see much of a difference in the pubs and clubs,it`s just a bit of a pain having to go outside in the cold and rain to light up so i tend not to smoke as heavy but make up for it afterwards.

They will become better places to visit. I hate the smell of smoke on my clothes and on my body. Why should I inhale their smoke, when I am a non-smoker. I know some pubs may lose business because of the ban but in the long run it will be better for peoples health. I dont share my beer with anyone so why should they share their smoke with me?

well im scots and we've had it banned for the last year. the pubs are still very busy. main problem is that generally pubs now reek of male BO which the smoke used to cover. on the upside, every pub now has a covered area outside for smokers so it looks very continental. generally its very sociable, you get out for a smoke and meet other social lepers like me! im trying to quit for the umpteenth time so it does help banning smoking in pubs.
