You can be recruited with a MBA from a lot of schools, but you probably have more access to great opportunities if you have gotten your MBA from a top program. I think the top programs offer the networking and connections that you need to get recruited for something great, and that is what you are paying for. The top companies want people with brand name educations and they are willing to pay for it. When you go shopping for something that is really important to you, if you have the money aren't you more likely to buy a brand that is well known and respected, giving the perception of higher quality, rather than the generic brand, and pay a premium doing so? People are usually willing to pay more for what they think is better quality and reliable. I think it's kind of like that.
I know a girl who got a MBA from Keller Graduate Management, which is part of DeVry and she is still working at the same boring job she had before she got her MBA. In contrast, MBAs from top schools get recruited for great positions with high profile companies. It doesn't mean my acquaintance is not as bright as or as promising as someone with a MBA from Wharton, but in comparing the two, the Wharton MBA would probably seem like the more impressive candidate.
I am sure part of being recruited depends on how much you apply yourself but the connections offered at the great schools are what is most valuable, IMO.
