Knocking noise when accelerator is released. Told by garage that it is coming from gerabox and they can add some additive but will need new gearbox soon. Does this sound right?

Possibly - does the gearstick move around a lot when you life off the accelerator.

If you aren't sure, take it to another garage - if they give the same answer then that's your problem.

Hi there the most likley cause of that is either engine mountings or gearbox mountings i would say. Gearbox addatives dont work ! lol they reduce the friction inside the box which is not what you need, you actually need some friction in a gearbox otherwise it dont work properly id take it to another garage for a second opinion try asking around where you live see if there is an old established garage that other people respect

Possible but depends whether it is knocking or rumbling!

Knocking usually point to gearbox - Rumbling to big end bearings on con rods!

Additive - don't bother - just replace the gearbox! Get a decent one from scrapyard for about forty quid or off eBay for a tenner or so!

I doubt that , look for lower ball joints play, wishbone bushes worn. anti roll bar bushes , worn engine mount. loose drive shaft nut(either side,) Drive shaft cv,s joints , something fouling driveshafts, clutch breaking up. could be any of the former, if it was a gearbox it would be noisy on thrust not decelaration

if it is front wheel drive have your cv axles checked. Also it could be a motor or transmission mount. is there a vibration in the steering wheel. Also it if has an automatic it could have loose flywheel bolts.

I dont suppose the garage are trying to give you a bum steer. I'd take their advice and replace the box.
