If I am the parent, and living overseas, how could they enroll him? What do they need? Is it similar to sending kids to boarding school overseas. We are American, but I live in Germany.

Your grandparents definitely can enroll your son in school in the U.S. You are American citizens, he is a citizen, he is just relocating to "next of kin". You will have to fill out all the paperwork yourself as the parent, but show your parents are guardians, taking responsibility of his care while he lives with them. As long as it isn't permanent guardianship, there shouldn't be any problems through the legal system. You will have to sign all the forms from the school showing permission for his attendance and emergency care while he remains with them.

You could give them guardianship while you are apart. Then they can legally take him to the doctor, consent for medical care, enroll him in school etc...

Hey, I am a certified teacher. If he lives in the US for any reason he can go to school there. Contact your local school district by phone and they will make it easy for you.
