Your question is a little confusing to some readers. I'll assume that you mean:
1. 256 MB RAM
2. 330 MHz cpu speed
3. 8 GB of hard disk space
4. Windows 98
Your RAM is on the borderline. XP might just run. 330 MHz clock speed? Are you serious? I'm afraid you need lots more, at least upgrade to 800 MHz if not 1 GHz. 8 GB of hard disk space might accomodate XP, but then you won't have much to store other data (however that depends on your needs. If you want multimedia, you need more hard disk space. If you want office work and file manipulation, this may be okay).

NO.. Windows XP will take up to 5 gig just for the operating system sooner or later. After Updates ETC.. Windows ALSO uses Hard Drive for MEMORY. I leave 768 MB just for this RAM to HARD DRIVE CACHE... You really should get a 20 - 40 gig hard drive. BUT.. The draw back is you computers BIOS. BIOS will restrict you in the SIZE of the hard drive. Older computers like the 233mhz usually had a capacity limit of 8 Gig Hard drive. The 333 MIGHT be a AMD utilizing the OLD Pentium ONE style board.
That means the COMPUTER itself will NOT see past 8 GIG Hard Drive Space. Your BEST option is if you WANT XP is to check EBAY. I have seen some OLD DELL P III computers there WITH XP AND the COA intact for around $150.00... Windows XP for an UPGRADE at the store runs 100.00...
Ebay Search Cat. "DESKTOP PCs"
"PIII" +"windows xp"
Remember!!! Buyer BEWARE.. CHECK FEEDBACK, PAYMENT OPTIONS and SHIPPING CHARGES before bidding. Sometimes they charge you 50.00 for shipping etc...
Make sure they have the ORIGINAL RESTORE CD with the product.
This is the CHEAPEST route.
You REALLY want something with
AT LEAST
256 MB RAM --- 512MB++++ is PREFERED
20 GIG Hard Drive
PIII (3) 933 MHZ
I've used XP on OLD P(3) systems with 400MHZ. Not TOOO bad. But the 933 will be better.
If you have a used computer store in your area you could talk to them also. I've given old PII computers away if the customer goes out and buys an operating system.

.
• PC with 300 megahertz or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233 MHz minimum required (single or dual processor system);* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, or AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended
• 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)
• 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available hard disk space*
• Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor
• CD-ROM or DVD drive
• Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device
The Above is the system configuration that is required to install win xp.
It seems you have them all but the thing is you have them in the very border, so if you install many applications and softwares, your system will slow down surely.
Good solution is to increase the RAM atleast by another 256.

Is it possible to do? Yes, it is. Is it advisable to do? No, definitely not. You can buy a new computer that's 10-15 times as fast as that one, that comes with XP for less than $300. The cheapest I've ever seen anyone selling Windows XP was $90, and that's for the OEM version; the retail version is $199.;)

Your ram and processor speeds are fine -- but I would suggest at least 5-6 gigs of space on your hard drive and even then it may be a little sluggish. Try to free up 15% of your overall hard drive space for moderate performance.

it truly is the processor. Celeron is an fantastically sluggish processor form, and is used for notebooks many of the time (because they are quite low priced). What i'd do is purchase a clean one. in case you haven't got the money to purchase a clean one, you should improve your RAM then (a million GB, per chance 2). be careful what type of RAM you purchase, there are distinct kinds of.

I would say No. Xp will occupy atleast 2Gb of space for installation and with your processor speed, it will be slow too.

I don't think there be much left of your hard drive after installing it. I think it takes about 3.5gb of space.
Boot time would be horrific. Time to drop a little dough for a faster machine.
