First they lost all their colonies, now it looks like Ireland, Scotland, and Wales will finally be free of the English yoke.
Some strategists say they will lose it all within ten years time and be reduced to an insignificant and unproductive island populated by uneducated Eeastern Europeans of slavic decent. What do you think, has the sun set on the Great British Empire?

The days of Empire are long gone. We had quarter of the world at one point now all that's left are a few islands dotted around here and there.

A bit of geography - Ireland isn't part of Great Britain, it's a separate country. Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom (but not Great Britain, confusing I know). Scotland, Wales and England are a single island with lots of little offshore islands.

Scotland and Wales recently voted for a form of independence from England (devolution) and now have their own governments albeit with limited powers. The next stage will be full independence and it seems likely that Scotland will be the first country to take this step. It was 300 years ago today that Scotland and England joined and there has always been resentment from the Scots.

As separate countries, England would be the biggest loser as it is heavily subsidised by Scotland. Wales and Northen Ireland would gain in some ways and lose in others. Scotland would gain tremendously as it has huge oil reserves off it's coasts, the revenue from which is propping up the English economy.

As for being insignificant and unproductive. I guess you haven't been to England for a while, we've been insignificant and unproductive for decades, it's just that the government and media don't like to admit to it. We used to lead the world in ship-building, technology, steel and iron, transport, communications, electronics and much more but one by one these industries have been killed off. Now we're world leaders in erm... erm...

One look at our world rankings and you'll see that the country is in terminal decline. No wonder then that record numbers of people are leaving the country.

I agree with you, when you think so many Britons are moving abroad and so many immigrants are moving in, it's like Britain isn't British any more. And being Scottish myself I see the vote for independance getting closer.

Thanks Rich A that's sweet of you.
