It's the liberals way of taking CHRIST out of Christmas. The day of December 25 is to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. If there was no CHRIST in Christmas, "xmas" wouldn't be around for people to try to take Him out of it.

While some hoping to secularize "Christmas" have used "Xmas" (as a way of "crossing out" Christ), the letter X is the first letter in Greek (Chi) of the word "Christ." It has been commonly used since the first century as a designation for Christ by Christians and is still used in this way in liturgical churches. An example is the word "ΙΧΘΥΣ" which means literally "fish" but was used as short hand for "Jesus CHRIST God Son, Lord and Savior." Another is it's use in Christian iconagraphy and art. A third is the CHI- RHO symbol (one that looks like a P with and X through it that can be seen in the altar cloths and pulpit stoles throughout the world). It is even found in some early manuscripts of the New Testament.
From personal experience in seminary I can attest to the large number of students who used this symbol as part of their short hand when taking class notes (along with the Greek letter that begins the word for God - "Theos" (theta - Θ).

It's for all the liberals that don't believe Christ should be involved in anything anymore. Such as prayer at school, football games, or religious scriptures in Town Halls, etcl.......using the word "Christ" supposedly offends people because it's announcing 1 religion = christianity, and that suppresses a persons freedom of religion. I personally think it's crap, but hey, I'm just a nobody, but I'll always say CHRISTmas.

It stands for "Christ". Well, it's a way of blanking out the Christ part of Christmas. In this case "X" stands for the unknown. Or unmentionable. Someone else down the line will probably tell you it stands for Xenaphobia. Happy Xenaphobiamas!

Stands for Christ. Just a short form

Some people use it because they don't want to mention Christ; either because they're anti-religion or some religious people don't like to write the name of their God either.

However others -like me- simply like abbreviations! It's so much easier, I don't do MSN-speak with all the "u w8 for me" but regular abbreviations are just that, nice and short!

James got it absolutely right.

It's both amazing and depressing how Christians manage to get so uptight and indignant about something when the real root of the problem is their own ignorance of the history of their faith.

My quest is "X" stands for Jesus Christ name in Greek "Xριστός".
Or maybe is the sign of cross.

I always heard the X represented the cross Jesus died on, but I could totally be wrong.
