A buddy of mine told me that they make special candles that you can stick in your ear (lite on the other side) and it will suck out all the wax into the special candle. He said when you are done, to not look inside the candle because it will make you sick to see the stuff that is in there. Anyones else know anything about this? I'm going to do some research on the internet. I'll let you know what I find.

If it's a scam then what is all the junk it pulls out. It's got to be better than a Q-Tip

I had it done by a herbalist before, it pulled out all this stuff from my ear, the only sensation is some warmth and a crackling sound from the burning candle. Some people claim it is the wax from the candle, if thats the case then that would mean you should feel the wax fall into your ear but that doesnt happen.

Some people also claim that they damaged their ears from using ear candles, but the reason is because they havent taken any precausions such as using a outer plate to catch the wax and no filtering mechanisms inside the candle. You also have to make sure the person doing it is experienced. Its a whole lot cheaper than going to a ENT specialist to have it syringed out which can also cause damage to your ear.

There should be some sort of transfer from the ear to the exterior for a wax cleaning effect. If none is evident the procedure could only have a psychological effect. The procedure does not appear to be dangerous other than if one tries to actually melt wax into the ear, or the hair catches fire. In either case it would be hazardous to one's health. The procedure has no bases in science that is discernible. There are numerous ideas about alternative medicine that have not been in main stream medicine for years, but are now being understood within the scientific community. Not understanding how some procedures work does not always dictate that they are a hoax, but as with acupuncture the knowledge of the chemo electrical operation of the body is better understood and likened to understanding the galvanic skin test, which works on the electrical properties of the skin in conjunction with the sodium contend on the surface of the skin. Botton line is that we as individuals must research these so called treatments for ourselves, and get to know things for our selves not taking what is told to us blindly.

A friend did it for other people. its an old remedy but so was getting liquored up and yanking teeth.

I am not sticking anything in my ears ever again nor is anyone going to be invited to do so. Stuck a piece of paper in my ear as a child and it stayed in there until I was about 27. To embarassed to tell anyone.

Why take chances, go to a doctor if something is amiss.

I've never used them before but most doctors suggest using the ear candles instead of q-tips because q-tips only push the wax into the ear canal. Q-tips are only intended for make-up removal believe it or not. You can get those ear candles at heath food stores and i've also seen them at GNC.

Acupuncturists, naturopaths and herbalists use them. I used to work in a natural therapies clinic and saw it all the time. I've used them myself and used them on people. If you have a bad blockage or suffer from frequent ear/throat infections they can be fantastic.
They're no scam, they've been used for centuries by peoples such as native Indians.
The stuff they suck out is pretty gross but is testament to the fact that they work.
