Well, every now and again, as it grows bigger, it Molts its shell. it's old shell cracks and it breaks out of it. It is then left with a soft shell. The shell is now soft in order to give it time to grow before it hardens, which it eventually does. there's a little more to it, but that's the basics of it.

its old shell comes of and new shell will be soft for a few days,be careful it can be attacked at this stage until it go,s hard as normal.if only got one crab it will be safe,plus that is when they mate,
