The answer depends on what you're trying to do.
Keep in mind that the hardware (such as the CPU, RAM, etc) aren't always the problem. For example, if you're just trying to surf the internet and watch video, your system is plenty fast enough for that. However, Windows can slow to a crawl over time as it gets infected with junk in the registry as well as overloaded with processes that load at startup.
If you know how, I suggest you get a new hard drive and load a fresh install of Windows on it. Slave the old hard drive and pull the data off of it that you want to keep. You will notice a huge boost in speed right away. I also recommend upgrading your RAM to a minimum of 512MB. Consider using a backup utility like Acronis TrueImage or Norton's Ghost to make frequent images. So if something happens down the road and things begin to slow on you, you can restore to an image you've made.
Of course, if you're doing more such as gaming or video editing, then it's time to upgrade. Even the cheapest $500 PC from Dell right now is going to blow your system out of the water.

The best thing to do is to get more RAM . It can speed up the system a lot . And the other is that u can try download.com for that . There are tons of software out there which helps your system run smoothly using windows XP
There might be a reason why its running slow. Spyware and adware programs might have cluttered up your computer and there is not enough space for the system to run smoothly. Install a spyware blocker also or use ad-aware . It will help u very much.
The best thing is to install a software and let the experts do it ^_^

Although by enhancing the RAM by another 256 MB, you will get the desired results immediately. but with Windows Vista launched, it is advisable that you go for minimum core duo processor of speed more than 2.4 GHz and a RAM of 1GB. This combination will make you comfortable for another two years to come.
