Learning algebra and higher math shows that you have the ability to solve problems; that you have the resolve to learn something difficult and helps you to refine your thinking. If you are going to flip hamburgers for a living, it won't make a bit of difference. If you are going out in the world and you have no job experience to offer, your ability to do math will get you that job over someone that couldn't or wouldn't do math.
I, much like you, screwed up my math and didn't care. Later I decided that I didn't like the idea that math was my weak point. I started college just to better myself and started with, yea you guessed it, remedial algebra. It wasn't too exciting because you have to start with the basics and learn tons of rules. Since I'm a good game player and I like games with lots of rules, I decided I would play math. I went as far as possible and found out that the ability to do higher math, not only opens door s for you, it opens your mind. I even had an alegebra teacher that made it very, very interesting. Thank you Mr. Mitchell. I ended up changing careers and am now an accountant. I worked in the industry for a few years and then opened my own business. I live nicely and can have just about what I want. Thank you math.

You can literally save THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS over the course of your life if you can do basic algebra.
*Compare/contrast costs/benefits for small stuff (i.e., groceries), or big stuff (homes/vehicles/mpg/operating costs/TAXES/you get the idea).
You might be able to get a really cool job helping others (i.e., medical/legal/teaching), or designing cool stuff (engineering).
Push through the boring "dog-poop" to get to the really cool stuff.
