shunned someone of a different origin at first and were rude to them,would it be natural for them to reciprocate?

It would depend on how evolved they were, but it would be understandable if they did respond negatively. The only solution to this would be to explain that you did not understand how stupid you were being, and ask for forgiveness.

Yes, and not out of prejudice, but just because it's normal to politely avoid uncomfortable situations. It takes a lot of strength of character to act 'normal' when someone else is doing otherwise.

It sounds like you don't know the person very well. If so, don't make a big deal about it; just let your past actions be in the past. Take a positive action instead, say hello when you see him/her, make whatever small talk fits the situation, etc. Treat this person exactly as you should have from the beginning, as another colleague and potential friend.
