I'm going to take a long trip, and I can't decide between these two books.
You can also suggest some classic alternatives. My favourite era is the 1930s-1950s. Just make sure it's thick ;)

they are both well worth the read
an interesting comparison and contrast, also large, would be John Dos Passos' U.S.A. trilogy

I can't speak of the other novel, but the Borhters Karamazov is a genius work. The stories about "The Onion" and "The Grand Inquisitor" are my favorite topics for discussion.

If you're interested in philosophical questions regarding God, its a definite must read for its ability to argue both sides of the debate.

The Brothers Karamazov. Try Thomas Love Peacock's Nightmare Abbey. It's not exactly your era but you'll like it.

i too would suggest Brothers Karamozov. i just finished it and fell in love with the book. Dostoevsky's characters are utterly fascinating, and the book, though lengthy, was one of the most pleasurable reads I've had. Dostoevsky himself said of the book that he felt he had completely expressed himself (as an author) after completing it, although it was supposed to have a sequel.
