The problem is you can't actually time it. That is why we have BC! Your friend was referring to the rhythm method where a woman tries to determine when during the month she is most susceptible to pregnancy. A woman can try to do this by taking her temperature in the morning (among many other ways), and by estimating her ovulation date (most women ovulate about 14 days before their period, but it is not an accurate form of BC. You are not guaranteed to ovulate exactly 14 days before your period starts, and your temperature can change for a million different reasons. You can't really tell when you are ovulating, and you can actually get pregnant at ANY time during the month. The "time it" method leads to a lot of unplanned pregnancies.

I had a friend who once believed that until she got pregnant. There is really no good way to "time it". I take it that timing it means to have sex around her ovulation time (that is when you get pregnant). But your ovulation time can change & that is not a full proof method of birth control. Usually your ovulation time is around the 14th day of your cycle. (The first day or your last period is Day #1) As you know, the only 100% birth control is abstience. Other than that, if you dont want to get pregnant then you should use something, like condoms, pills, patches, foam, sponges, shots, whatever.

the time of ovulation is 14 day after the first day of period. so ovulation goes about 3 days. it means before ovulation and after ovulation u can't get pregnant. but it has been proven by many examples that this is a very very bad birth control - sperm is supposed to live inside a woman's body only 3 to 5 days, but there re some sperms which can live up to 2 weeks. sometimes due to some stress or whatever ovulation can occure earlier or later than 14 days. which means u can get pregnant any time - u had unprotected sex even before period started but sperm was holding tight inside u so voila - u get pregnant.

ok, what i think she meant as "timing it" was refering to timing the period of time that she is actually ovulating and the "safe" days of not being able to concieve. I know some people use that as a type of "birth control". I really don't know how reliable it would be, but if not ready for kids...i wouldn't use it as my only mean of BC!

There are days when you're more fertile than other days.
So, in theory, you can have sex on your least fertile days and be at a LOWER RISK of pregnancy.
HOWEVER-- this doens't mean you WON'T get pregnant. It just means that the odds are lower.
I wouldn't trust this method, honestly.
There are months where both ovaries will ovulate and you won't know it-- and there go your odds!

I would recommend your friend NOT to attempt the "timing" method. My b/f and I decided to try this...we now have a 13 month old son. Our son is the greatest blessing, but it was unplanned and not the best timing. So if your friend isn't ready to accept this responsibility, then she may want to talk to a doctor or family planning clinic to explore her options.

there is a way to chart your cycle and know when you ovulate and when you are most likely to get pregnant, which is 2 weeks before you start your period you can "time it" and not have sex during your fertile time. I've heard it can work if you know your cycle well.

I think she meant perhaps the rythym method? It means not to have sex during the period of ovulation. It's 6-9 days before you get your period. It's not 100% accurate, & it doesn't protect agains sexually transmitted diseases.
