I think this hideous record belongs to Mao Ze Dong who is purported to have killed the mind-boggling number of some 49 million people in China during the course of his "Great Leap Forward" and "Cultural Revolution".
Stalin's "Purges" accounted for around 13 million, Hitler's "Final Solution" for 11-12 million, and Pol Pot's regime 1.7 million.

It was Hitler. 11 million people were killed in the holocaust. About 2 million during Pol Pot's regime.

Depends what you mean by 'killed'.
If you are asking about someone who deliberately set out to murder specific groups of people then it was probably Hitler. King Leopold of Belgium killed nearly 6 million Africans in what was known as the Belgian Congo at the turn of the century, beating Pol Pot hands down.
If you are talking about someone who killed as a result of idiotic ideological experiments, then its between Stalin and Mao (collectivisation in Russia or the cultural revolution in China) but no one will ever know the true totals.

Pol Pot "only" killed 1.5 Million as part of the Year Zero plan to make Cambodia a "pure" Communist state.
Hitler was responsible for up to 11 Million deaths - including 6 million Jews as part of his ethnic cleansing of Gypsy's, Jews, mentally ill etc
The figures for Stalin are widely disputed due to poor record keeping, what was he exactly responsible for (i.e. can you count the great winter famine 1932/33 that cost the lives of approx 6 - 8 Million - was this simply over population or a direct consequence of Stalin's rule / intervention (or lack of it))
The figures for Stalin are therefore taken to be anywhere between 10 - 20 million but may be more.

Hitler and Pol Pot are small fry compared to Joseph Stalin. He is thought to have ordered the deaths of around 20 million people but some people hold him responsible for around 60 million bacause of those who died as a result of poor conditions in prisons and general starvation throughout the USSR during his leadership. All in all - a nasty peice of work.

I would say Stalin. We didn't hear quite so much about his atrocities because the news was mainly about Hitler and the Holocaust. I'm not sure but I think Stalin had about 20 million killed during the pogroms.

If I remember correctly, Polpot killed around 1.7 million people; Hitler killed in the neighborhood of 10 million people; and Josef Stalin was responsible for the deaths of upwards of 25 million soldiers and civilians over the years. The biggest reason we don't know more about Stalin is because of the fact that he was killing his own people in the Gulag, unlike Hilter who was invading neighboring countries.

I agree with Neil. Hitler is tops in out and out murder, Stalin is second in that regard. However Mao's utterly stupid policies probably killed more people than Hitler and Stalin put together,
even if killing them was not his intention.

Stalin wiped out 1/3 the population of some Soviet states. He tried to wipe out a whole CLASS of people.
