Rich or poor, normal life is what you do every day. Thus the Royal Family don't see themselves as anything but living normal lives. That means constantly being under the spotlight and public gaze and being heavily criticised every time they make even a minor mistake.

Prime Ministers appreciate the Queen's vast knowledge on national and international affairs and greatly respect her judgment.

Of course the Queen and her family are hugely wealthy, but they contribute greatly to this country. I think you will find that a certain footballer is about to "earn" $1 million A WEEK, and that his totally untalented wife made £24 million a year - for what?

If you were better educated you would see the worth of the Royal Family - have a look at the Court Circular in the Times and see how much work they all do - and remember, the Queen is 80 years old. I doubt you will EVER work as hard as her.

The Royal Family know full well that they were born into a life of public service and they serve us, day in day out, only to have uneducated morons who cannot even spell the language of this country criticise them.

Unfortunately we now have a culture where "celebrity" is important and public service isn't. Vast numbers of our countryfolk watch moronic "reality" TV shows, where disturbed individuals become famous for being odd and rich for being famous, yet those who serve are derided. God help the next generation.

A referendum isn't when a country becomes republic just by the way. It is a form of direct democracy where the public vote on a simple 'yes' or 'no' question!

But I think there might be a chance in the future that Europe could become the United States of Europe. But the monarchy brings in too many tourists which equals money.

Pardon, we had that choice to ditch Blair but as usual we willy nilly voters would not stand up and be counted. Do you really want a republic? Even more repressed people...no way hosea. What we need is a PM who is willing to listen and not shrug his voters off wholesale. It was a very clever move of Blairs to say he was going to stand down.......thus insuring the continuation of the Labour party. Because we as a nation will always give someone new the benefit of the doubt; that someone being Gordon Brown.

No contest at the next general election ; Labour will survive another term wait and see. One can only hope that the ministers serving will have something in their portfolios that will be of benefit to this country. And that we have a PM who does not play lip service to an American President.

I doubt it will ever happen-but there might be rocky roads ahead. Some people say oh there's only 3 percent Muslims in the UK, but small ruling minorities HAVE controlled Britain in the past-Romans,Saxons,Vikings & Normans! So it's far from impossible. We really should have encouraged intergration, rather than allowing huge isolated communities to develop, which causes racism and suspicion on BOTH sides. BTW- for the guy who said he'd move to Canada. It's happening there too. A proposal to impliment Sharia law for muslims in one province actually went before the government (but was rejected.)

The monarchy is our last defence from a wayward government!
It amazes me that so many people on here seem totally illiterate to the constitution of this country and don't have a clue as to how our 'government' is established, and who does what!!!!!!!!
It's about time a full understanding of the constitution was necessary before being allowed to leave school.
It's shameful.

I cannot .under any circumstances, other than bloody battle and utter distruction see England becoming a republic. All I can add to that is "God Save The Queen".
