Personally I would get an acer as they are good value for money and very reliable. I only use acer computers at home and have never had a problem with one i have used them for 12 years.
I would not get a HP I have had 2 friends buy them last year and they have both had to get warranty work done to them for a malfunctioning motherboard
I am unsure about Compaq but i would not buy one now because they are owned and made by HP
I would not buy a Dell because i work in the IT department at a private school that uses them and out of 30 new laptops 5 of
them had to be repaired within the first 2 days of getting them.
I have never used gateway computers so i don't know what they are like

It depends on your need.
For just view web site on the internet. All of them are OK.
For doing programming with stable performance, go with compaq and IBM.
For business travel, go with Acer or HP
Never go with Dell. My company lease a whole bunch Dell laptops for salesmans, they all have the same hardware problem even after upgrad to new mother board. Dell is cheaper but won't last long. Unless you are a business customer, they will treat you differently.
I personally own two compaq Presario laptops. They are rock solid. I pay extra to get 3 year services warranty. I have only use once on my older one. I am doing heavy duty programming running Oracle database, MSSQL for 24 hours and 365 days. It burn down the hard drive and Compaq/HP replace it for free in two weeks.
Also look into the layout of the laptop. Some give you two USB and some give your 4 USB ports. The screen size and resolutions also does matter. The same 15.4" screen can have $500 difference if the highest resolutions are lower (much lower).
Even HP bough Compaq, they still have their own production line in China. Go with Compaq, which build with better quality.

Personally, I would not go with either one of them since I've tried them all and have been extremely disappointed. Sony is the best I've tried since it is so much more durable than the others. It is actually made to last! I bought one of Dell's best a few years back and it crashed after about a year. They sent me a replacement and that one came with a flickering screen. But it could just be my misfortune too. Otherwise, I would say to go with Dell first, because the others just plain suck in my opinion.

HP has the good performance, although it sucks at tech support.
Compaq is the cheapest, although it also sucks at tech support.
Dell has the best performance, but their batteries have a tendency to heat up.
Gateway sucks.
Acer is a good brand, but there's a better brand out there, and that's IBM/Lenovo.
IBM/Lenovo PCs may be a little bit expensive, but they are very reliable. My advice:
Get an IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad now!

There are different photo adapters at the same time with professional savage, besides the undeniable fact that the major manufacturers significantly obtainable are Ati and Nvidia. I choose Nvidia over Ati because it kind of feels to artwork extra useful and a lot less conflicts with WinXP. because you're growing a pc, i do not imagine that you're going to have the alternative to improve the video card if it doesn't do the job for you. it truly is per chance perfect to get a operating laptop or computer for this way of job (mutimedia, etc).

IBM/Lenovo (IBM is now Lenovo) they are without a doubt the best. I refurbish and sell used laptops and you will see their resale value is the highest of them all. Check ebay and you will see that the used IBMs are the most expensive. IBM has the best support, through their website, Ibm/Lenovo will update all your software and drivers automatically. All the others are made cheaply and their support is lacking. If I had to pick a second best I would say Toshiba is second.
