The top predator in the area of Germany where the Propalaeotherium is found is thought to be the giant flightless bird, Gastornis (see link below), although some scientists argue that it was not carnivorous at all and the large beak was for crushing nuts.

The Messel pit near Frankfurt am Main in Germany, where many Propalaeotheria fossils have been found also contained fossils of Asiatosuchus (a large crocodile), Allognathosuchus (a durophagous crocodile) and Diplocynodon (an alligator), who could have preyed on the horse when it came down to drink. There was also Palaeopython (a snake) that could also have been a threat.

The enemy of my enemy is most likely my friend. I keep my friends close but enemies much closer. Any enemy is a spice. Life is pursuit of taste. Flat side of grave is enemy domain for mortals; so many choices - so little time.
