Martin Luther king as most of us know was a civil rights activist and upheld the law so a place full of crime would have a light of hope on them if they had a name such as his.

It is not the crime and it is extremely disrespectful to think that way. Usually Martin Luther Streets are in areas where black people live because he is one of the greatest individuals to get freedom, liberty, and justice, for the blacks who were unjustly arrested and killed for whites wrong doings. Today, color do not matter as it did then. I will not tell you what color I am because we are all the same inside. We have came so far since Martin was alive and we have to be thankful for all that he did. God Bless America.

Streets are not chosen because of their high crime rate, but rather streets named for MLK are typically in African-American neighborhoods. Many of these areas do have high crime rates, but that is not why those particular streets are picked. Also, the changing of a large street is a big proposition, it involves more than just changing the street signs. All of the people who live on that street must get new ID's (driver's licenses, etc.) Also businesses must change advertising, and so on. Civic pride in having a local street named in honor of Dr.King also results in neighborhoods being cleaned up and lowering the crime rate.
